Where is Vava’u?Vava’u is a group of more than 50 islands in Tonga, about 150 miles north of Tongatapu. They are either raised coral limestone or coral atolls. The beautiful harbour opposite the main town of Neiafu (known as the Port of Refuge Harbour) is a common destination for yachties sailing the South Pacific. The waters of the islands are known for their clarity, it being said that you can see the bottom at 40 metres

How to Get Here

From the Los Angeles USA, Fiji Airways (, Air New Zealand (, Qantas ( and American Airlines fly to Fiji (Nadi) from there Fiji Airways flies direct to Vava’u (limited times of the year) or via Tongatapu (Nukualofa) the main island in the Kingdom of Tonga. From Australia Virgin fly to Tongatapu direct from Sydney twice a week. From New Zealand, Air New Zealand has daily flights from Auckland to Tongatapu. From Europe there are a number of option via Singapore or Hong Kong linking with Fiji Airways that flies into to Nadi then onto to Tonga (as above) or via Australia or New Zealand (as above) with a number of different airlines.

If you do not choose the Fiji Airways direct flight to Vava’u on arriving in Tongatapu there is a 45 minute flight aboard the domestic carrier; Real Tonga Airlines (, generally two daily except for Sundays.

Getting to Vavau

Now that you have reached Tongatapu (Nukuʻalofa) . The next step is getting to Vavau.  There are two ways of getting to Vavau.

By air or water.  There are daily flights from Tongatapu to Vavau (schedule here).


The other option is by Ferry, very economical.  Please keep in mind the crossing is 24 hours and seating is limited.
